The basilica Palaiopolis , one of the most important Byzantine monuments in Corfu , built in the mid-5th AD century by the Bishop of Corfu Ioviano .

The temple was built in the center of the Roman market of Corfu and very close to the port , was roofed five-aisled basilica with a transept , double narthex , atrium and rich sculpture and mosaic decoration. For building materials from the adjacent ancient pagan temples , which still visible on its walls .

The 15th century was a large Catholic monastery complex , dedicated to the Virgin Anafonitria . The church then deserted and bombed during the Second World War .
